'Bringing Hope to the Innocent' The Miscarriages of Justice Organisation (MOJO) was set up in 2001 to provide assistance to innocent people, both pre and post release from prison. They have stubbornly endeavoured to establish themselves in a political environment all too willing to cover up its failings. MOJO gained charitable status in 2004, a year after relocating their office back to Glasgow. Having repeatedly requested funding from the Scottish Executive and been rejected, they were about to close down the charity after struggling indefinitely on a pitiful budget. Founders Paddy Hill and John McManus had decided to hold a high profile press conference to question the Scottish Executive's intent to support those people wrongfully convicted by the criminal justice system, of crimes they have not committed. As a result of their determined actions, in March 2005 the Scottish Executive finally awarded MOJO a grant of £ 50,000 per year. Today MOJO runs 2 core services. They facilitate the traumatic transition from prison to the outside world through encouraging innocent people to receive professional counselling, and providing practical assistance where possible in helping victims come to terms with the overwhelming impact of having overturned a conviction. MOJO also provides an advocacy service with a growing network of professional support, giving an essential voice to innocent victims who remain incarcerated. This is carried out through case evaluation and the recommendation of quality defence lawyers, forensic experts and journalists. They have recently launched a Campaign: A RETREAT FOR THE INNOCENT
MOJO needs to ringfence in the region of £ 500,000 to build a rural residential retreat for innocent victims coming out of prison, the first of its kind in Britain. You can make all the difference by making a donation. Even a small donation to MOJO helps them to support victims. Please make cheques payable to MOJO Scotland and send to: MOJO Scotland, GMAC, 3rd Floor, 34 Albion Street, Glasgow, G1 1LH. |
