Simon Hattenstone The Guardian, September 2004 L A Naylor has dedicated years to highlighting miscarriages of justices. In this book, she shows how the likes of Paddy Hill and Robert Brown were left to rot inside the system, and when they finally had their convictions overturned they were left without an apology, unsupported and often helpless in the "free" world. What is most alarming in all these cases is that either there was enough evidence to prove their innocence or insufficient evidence to convict. Naylor shows how once a miscarriage has happened the establishment closes in to prevent it being exposed. The book is at its most powerful when these lifers and former lifers tell their own devestating stories. Perhaps the strongest message to emerge is that there is no peace without justice. Anyone interested in Britain, social justice and human resilience should read this book.
